+Emerging into a shed, the group cautiously looks around. Kindred peeks through he door. It is a courtyard. Trampled flowerbeds lie smeared and squashed across this muddy courtyard. On all sides, stark gray walls climb toward a narrow gap of sunless sky. It is overcast with some drizzle.
 +
 +But the rain is odd.
 +
 +Warm.
 +
 +Oily.
 +
+//”Let’s get out of this,”// Kindred rumbles.
 +
+They move to the door closest to the shed and a long hallway. Barricades are to the south, 4 feet high of debris. A crossbow bolt wizzes by. Two orderlies stand there.
 +
+//“Whoa, there! We got more here!” //
 +
+Versa voice is sweetness and calm. Kindred and Zarith try to intimidate them.
 +
+Nikolai feels irritation at the bullies he is stuck with.
 +
+But with the raised voices another man emerges.
 +
+Vaustin York is the closest thing they have as a leader.
 +
+//”You need to stay right there!”//
 +
+It is soon evident that these are survivors who cannot tell if the party are doppelgangers or not.
 +
+//”If we bring back evidence we are killing them, will that help?”// Versa asks sweetly.
 +
+York ponders. //”That might do. Plenty to stuff on your side of the barricade”// he notes gesturing north back down the hallway.
 +
+The group heads up the hallway, investigating rooms. Searching for something to kill. They find bodies that look almost human. Staff who have been worked over. One body radiates evil.
 +
+It is some sort of undead and the head wrenchs and tear free of the body.
 +
 +A //Ray of Frost// springs from Nikolai’s hands.
 +
 +Leif stabs.
 +
 +Kindred smashes.
 +
 +Zarith slashes.
 +
 +The head is dead again.
 +
 +Another body.
 +
 +This time hands.
 +
 +Again they are stopped.
 +
+//”Help me!”// comes from another door.
 +
+Kindred investigates. It is a laundry room. Sturdy racks and toppled tables suggest this space once served as a sizable laundry. Much of the northern end of the room is filled with rubble.
 +
+There is a chained man on the wall with a ghoul. Kindred kills the ghoul.
 +
+Then charging in, another ghoul dressed as a nurse and a human who is a doctor. The nurse slashes the half orc in the party, paralyzing her. Versa immediately heals her.
 +
+Kindred cleaves the nurse in two and then kills the doctor. The doctor’s features melt away. A doppelganger.
 +
+Deeper into the laundry is worse. This is a chamber of horrors. A small surgery where a doppelganger is doing experiments on a ghoul who was once Chaplain Setrakian.
 +
+More death built by the part.
 +
+They finish their search. Nothing is left in this part of the former asylum still moving.
 +
 +=== Survivors ===
 +
 +{{ :game_systems:pathfinder:aeons:npcs:winter.png?200|}}
 +
+They bring their evidence and Leif asks, //“Can we be friends now?”//
 +
+They are taking to the chapel past sounds of crying behind a curtain. It is a chapel to Pharasma and thus holy. They feel a lessening of pressure on their minds.
 +
 +Hallowed ground.
 +
+There are 22 survivors in the group. Supporting them is a cleric of Pharasma herself.
 +
 +Winter Klaczka.
 +
+//” I’m Winter Klaczka, a sister of Maiden’s Choir Cathedral in Caliphas. My associates and I were helping a Royal Accuser investigate strangeness in Thrushmoor.”//
 +
+She confirms this is Briarstone Asylum. And she was here as part of her investigation when the revolt happened. She was helping the Royal Investigators. Nikolai knows these are secret agents of the Crown. She has an Imperial Warrant.
 +
+//”You cannot sleep outside the Chapel. Then you get the nightmares that turn you..into what you say.”//
 +
 +The party sits in silence.
 +
+//”We all dreamed of the Tatterman,”// Versa says finally.
 +
+//”And you have not turned? And you have no memories of who you are other than belonging together. Strange.”//
 +
+//Campri”// Nikolia said. He was sleeping.
 +
+When they went back, he was already a ghoul.
 +
+//“We can’t leave. It’s as if the outside world has turned against us. I don’t know if it’s just Briarstone Isle, or if it’s the whole world, but the hospice is surrounded by some repulsive vapor. Worse, the weather beyond is like nothing I’ve ever seen—thunder like laughter, rain like blood. And that’s to say nothing of the shapes that scamper and flap within, vague forms that know when we sleep. Things are terrible here, but at least here we can see doom coming.”
 +
+//”What is worse we are trapped her. That crying? It is a thing. Grown over the door. We’ve left it alone and it hasn’t bothered us. Don’t tell the others about it, though. I don’t what to upset the children or any of our more delicate souls. Things are bad enough without that.”//
 +
 +//”Then we investigate.”// Kindred decides.
 +
+Kindred pushed past the dingy curtain. The wall here suffers some sort of otherworldly parasitism. A mass of stringy, yellow fungus stretches across the stone blocks. At its heart bulges and blinks a watery eye the size of a wagon wheel.
 +
+As they approach it the walls wails in Aklo as it cries ammonia tears.
 +
 +{{:game_systems:pathfinder:aeons:monsters:weepin_eye.png?200 |}}
 +
 +//”WHAT HAVE I BECOME?”//
 +
 +Nikolai and Zarith understand it.
 +
+Neither know that he or she spoke Aklo.
 +
+They retreat and go to rest and recover in the Chapel. Their dreams are guarded here.
 +
 +What does tomorrow bring?

 +
+In the morning, the very first thing Nikolai does is head to the Chaplin’s shrine. Here he would prepare for the day. A wall of iron bars locks away ecclesiastical records for many of the patients. The cramped space can be accessed via a squat door of swinging bars.
 +
+Records might tell them something about themselves.
 +
+Leif and Nikolai both try to pick the lock and fail. Discouraged, they go back to the others and spend the rest of the morning helping care for the refugees and dividing up the loot they found killing the various monsters in this area.
 +
+Versa is popular both for her beauty and her ability to //create water// that is pure and drinkable. Lief and Kindred, though somewhat scary, are good with the others as well.
 +
+Zarith and Nikolai are less popular. Much less popular. The half-orc and tiefling are simply too close to the fact people have turned into monsters overnight in Brairstone.
 +
+After they had helped serve a midday meal to the wretched people around them, Nikolai tries again at that lock. He has had time to think about it. This time he easily opens it.
 +
+//”You are better at that than I am,”// Leif notes to the young wizard.
 +
+//”Yes, I learned young, before I could even cast spells, back when….”// he stops as he remembers tiny hands guiding his.
 +
+Leif puts his hand on Nikolai’s shoulder, //”Yeah. I keep getting that too. Thoughts just …end”//
 +
+//”Maybe there are records here that will help us.”// Nikolai says
 +
 +There aren’t.
 +
+Tollman suggests that Dr. Losandro, the Administrator, might have records in her office if they are not in Admission.
 +
+But first they have to get past that fungus covered door. With the eye.
 +
+//”I have an idea,”// Nikolai says brightly. //”Zarith, go get that big mirror we saw and bring it down here.”//. Zarith nods and goes to grab it with zeal.
 +
+//”What are you thinking?”// Versa asked
 +
+//”It asked what it had become last night. We can show it.”//
 +
+Zarith returned with the mirror, //”If Nikolai thinks this will work, I am all for it,”// and with that she shoved aside the curtain and showed the gigantic eye its own reflection.
 +
+The eye gazed upon its reflected image. Another wail goes up as the eye rolls up, until no iris can be seen. Then the fungus starts to brown, and dry. They watch it wither away in front of them, leaving the door freed.
 +
+The rest of the party is impressed.
 +
+//”Kindred and Zarith, we should build another barricade in this direction. We can get out, but something else could come in and we don’t want to leave them exposed in this direction.”// Nikolai seems unaware he just issued orders- he was just thinking out loud.
 +
+Once the barrier was set up, the group of five…amnesiacs, entered into the Admission area on the other side of the once fungus covered door.
 +
+White tile, spiderwebbed with cracks, lines the walls of this cathedral-like hall. A prominent, oval desk faces staunch double doors, while hard benches and portraits of somber doctors line the walls. Regal stairs ascend toward a second floor, but rubble has crushed the upper flights, blocking passage. Lofty windows, gridded by bars, reveal yellow mist seething just beyond. Rubble blocks what was once an ornate staircase.
 +
+They force their way into the Consultation area. It is barricaded from the inside. Kindred calls out they are here to help, but there is no answer. Kindred’s strength allows him to simply shove it aside.
 +
+A long desk, several chairs, a sideboard, and numerous once-stately landscape paintings barricade the door of this somber conference room. A toppled wall opposite the barrier undermines the room’s defenses, a point driven home by the masked bodies littering the ground.
 +
+Versa examines the bodies and notes they were all bludgeoned to death. Nikolai thinks the collapsed wall behind them might have allowed someone, or something, to crawl inside.
 +
+They move on to the Visitors room. As though it had been plucked from the halls of some warm,
+country estate, this room is filled with inviting furnishings, a hearth ready for a fire, artwork populated by picnicking families, and a mansion-shaped cage with colorful taxidermic birds inside. Large windows might have once looked out over colorful flowerbeds, but now show only yellow mist. A battered corpse is impaled on the antlers of a stuffed elk head hung above the hearth.
 +
+The clockwork birds in this room are singing sweetly. The sound is in stark contrast to the gruesome sight.
 +
+A body lies on the floor, looking to have been dropped. Repeatedly. Another is impaled on the stuffed animal antlers. Both are in stained yellow robes wearing tattered yellow veils.
 +
+There is a garden path to another part of the Asylum, but Nikolia is adamant they move towards the Administrators office.
 +
+Then the bird’s pleasant song starts into a klaxon alarm.
 +
+Leif starts floating upwards. Towards the high celling. Thinking quickly, he summons the chain from the //handy haversack// he wears and tosses it to Kindred who arts to reel him in.
 +
+Then Nikolai starts up. He drops a //tanglefoot bag// at his feet, sticking him to the floor.
 +
 +Zarith is next.
 +
+Kinded, still dragging Leif like a balloon, draws his great blade and smashes through the cage, the bird, and right out the back.
 +
+Zarith and Leif drop to the floor. Leif drops into a roll like an acrobat. Zarith just tanks it.
 +
+Kindred stares at the smashed workings of the clockwork bird, remembering his strange dream of seeing gears fly from his body. Nikolai notices but says nothing.
 +
+The search of the cultists (because what else could they be) nets an //amulet of natural armor// a silver dagger, and more potions of //cure light wounds//. Those are divided up and the group moves on.
 +
+Zarith is fascinated with the alcove north of the Visitor area, while Nikolai moves towards the Library when leads to the Administrator’s office. Kindred and Versa join him.
 +
+They open the door, and are struck with the strong smell of rats.
 +
+“Where are Zarith and Leif?” Versa suddenly asks.
 +
 +==== East Courtyard ====
 +{{ :game_systems:pathfinder:aeons:monsters:nightgaunt.jpeg?400|}}
 +
+Zarith pushed open the door to the Courtyard and says impulsively to Leif, //”Let’s check this out!”// and grabs the human dragging him through the doorway into the courtyard.
 +
+High asylum walls hedge in this spacious courtyard garden. It is not raining at the moment. Only thin breaths of sickly fog seep in from overheard, though beyond it’s just as thick as ever. Misty wisps slip between leafless trees and simple benches, giving the impression of silent beasts prowling through the garden.
 +
+The two make their way through the courtyard towards the shed in the back.
 +
 +They don’t make it.
 +
+A shape descends through the fog and swoops against Zarith. It surged from the yellow fog without warning, its black, rubbery body nearly invisible until it was upon us. Vast batlike wings snapped open as it descended, horned head utterly blank where a face should have been, and its barbed tail lashed through the mist behind it. Long claws reached from the swirling haze to seize its prey, and the fog seemed to close around it again as quickly as it had appeared
 +
 +She starts laughing manically.
 +
+Leif starts backing up towards the door to the courtyard.
 +
+The monster attacks again and this time hauls Zarith into the air.
 +
+It is at this moment the other three enter into the Courtyard. At Versa’s question they had doubled back and saw the open door.
 +
+//”What is going on?!”// Thundered Kindred
 +
 +//”Something has Zarith!”//
 +
+They can all hear Zarith’s maniacal laughter as she is attacking the monster.
 +
+Then Thunder cracks across the courtyard and Leif and Nikolai can hardly hear, as their ears ring.
 +
+The monster slams Zarith to the ground. She is still laughing, but Nikolai cannot hear that. He can identify this creature as a Nightguant. His ears ringing, he cannot vocalize his spells.
 +
+But the nightgaunt decides to engaged Kindred. That was a mistake.
 +
+Kindred closes as Leif and Nikolai strike it with crossbow bolts.
 +
+Then Kindred’s sword makes short work of the unworldly creature as it tries to fly past him.
 +
+Zarith stands, still looking a bit crazed and marches over to the shed. It just holds a hole.
 +
 +A deep hole.
 +
+//”Enough of this. We need to find records of who we are. They are not going to be down there.”// Nikolai snapped, now his hearing was somewhat restored.
 +
+As they move from the Courtyard, rains starts to fall.
 +
 +Not oily this time.
 +
 +On fire.
 +
 +Yellow fire.
 +
 +==== Library and Administration ====
 +
 +{{:game_systems:pathfinder:aeons:npcs:eliege_losandron.png?400 |}}
 +
+They moved back to the library. Versa retrieved the dagger she had used to wedge the doors closed.
 +
 +They moved in.
 +
+Sagging shelves, held together by dust and an extensive system of rolling ladders, ring this library of husky, dulllooking tomes. At the room’s center broods a heavily worn table surrounded by uncomfortable chairs. A chandelier of iron vines dangles above. The scents of leather and old paper pervade the high-ceilinged space.
 +
 +But also rats.
 +
+Several of the lower shelves have had their contents scattered across the floor. The books and the backs of the nearby shelves have been gnawed through. Looking into the low, darkened shelves reveals narrow tunnels only passable by Tiny creatures bored through the wood and stone beneath
 +
+Zarith and Nikolai can hear murmurings in Aklo.
 +
 +//”Get help!”//
 +
 +Nikolai is impatient.
 +
+//”You are going to let us pass and we don’t kill you all!”//
 +
+With that he uses //predigestion// to make Kindred’s sword look afire. Kindred cannot speak Aklo, but he roars and swings his sword.
 +
+The chittering voices cry out in alarm. //”Let them pass! Let them pass!”//
 +
 +That is easy enough.
 +
+The next hallway is … messy. Some sort of green mucus is seeping under the doors. The party avoids it and heads to administration.
 +
 +They were not expecting this.
 +
+Yellow fog soundlessly roils against the cathedral-like windows of this opulent, two-story office. The ground floor features overstuffed furnishings, elegant side tables, and an altarlike desk of dark marble. A delicate spiral staircase and balcony of dark iron rises to a lofty library overhead. Both floors’ fixtures frame the lake of blood spread across the room’s center.
 +
+In a pool of blood is the Administrator. But she is not laying down. At the room’s center,  Eliege Losandro kneels in a pool of her own blood, her back straight, her mouth aping at the ceiling. From her soundlessly screaming mouth an unsteady torrent of colored mist spurts like a fountain of gritty sludge.
 +
+And despite all that has happened, the first instinct of this group of misfits is to help.
 +
+Kindred rushes to her, ignoring the strange fog. As he approaches her, he walks into one of her memories of being outside on a pleasant day.
 +
+Then he discovers he can //lay on hands// and healing energy courses into her. There is no effect other than her eyes turning blue.
 +
+She ignores Nikolai’s attempts at communication.
 +
+Kindred moves her from the Blood.
 +
+So the cloud encompasses the party.
 +
 +Versa experiences a lecture.
 +
 +{{ :game_systems:pathfinder:aeons:npcs:ulver.jpg?200|}}
 +
 +Nikolai intense study.
 +
 +Zarith and Leif fall unconscious.
 +
+In his dreams, Leif is in an alien city. The name unknown to him. A wall falls away and he moves towards a strange woman with a Harrower deck.
 +
+He is sitting. She is reading.
 +
 +“//Your past was the sacrifice”//
 +
 +She turns another card.
 +
 +//“The past sleeps in the doctor’s tome”//
 +
 +Zarith has a different dream.
 +
+She is wandering in the same endless vapor from before. Hours seem to pass. Maybe days. an exhausted-looking man with a ponytail of straight, white hair stumbles through the fog. He’s insane with desperation. He is shouting  //“We’re all lost here! We’ll never escape!”// Then as he is rushing away. His ranting, //“What have I done? What have I done?”//
 +
+Both Zarith and Leif awaken to their teammates frantically trying to get them to wake up. Their eyes open and the others look at them with fear.
 +
 +Have they changed?
