Pax classified Psionic adepts into three broad types of minds:

Type I: Adept has full benefit from psigrowth drugs
Type II: Adept has temporary benefit from psigrowth drugs
Type III: Adept has no effect from psigrowth drugs

Type I minds have the easiest time developing their skills. They develop faster, and could benefit from the full effect of psigrowth drugs. Pax psionic technology would respond to any type I mind with no adjustment. Type II minds and type III minds take longer to train, but can become as powerful at any type I given time and training. Type II minds can get a temporary boost using psigrowth drugs. All three types of minds can benefit from psistim drugs.

During the plagues, Type I minds were wiped out, and type II minds were severely reduced. The Psions, and important leaders of the Pax were all type I minds. Type III minds appeared immune to the effects of the psi-plagues.

Today, there are no active Type I minds. Type II minds occur, but any time they use psistim drugs, then simulate Type I minds and fall victim to the still active plague. The only minds left operating in any numbers are Type III minds.

All psionics take practice and training to use. Like exercise, use of abilities can increase them. In addition, exposure over time to more powerful psionic energy, or unshielded hyperspace can increase psionic potential.

Adepts usually have one discipline of psionics where they excel. Adepts that are more powerful may have more than one area of study. The Disciplines are:

Psionics work by making changes in the superspace/normal space boundary. Specific effects require the right pattern of quantum manipulation. Adepts learn methods for changing this flow that are called Patterns. Patterns are from others, learned trough research, or even be developed by the practitioner.
